How Do They Occur? Broken capillaries often appear in a thread-like appearance that resemble a matting, starburst or spider's web pattern, giving way to the term "spider veins". Though a definitive cause is unknown, breaking, split or damaged capillaries cause light seeping outside the vein wall and often take on a blue, purple or red hue - often very visible if close to the skin's surface, which they usually are found. Blood coagulates leaving a semi- or permanent pattern if left untreated. Pressure applied by weight gain, fatty tissue and fluid build-up, or pregnancy can damage vein walls and valves, causing microcirculation to cease or back-up into the branch-like structures of the capillary system.
